Freedom Road 04:59
FREEDOM ROAD Well Joey broke for the border with a posse on his trail. Well hell was better than another night in the cell of a Texas jail So today in the yard he took them all off guard, Yeah he left them opened mouthed. Hot-wired a car outside of San Antoine And he started heading South The border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. The Border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. Cut yourself some slack off the beaten track Just to keep your profile low All the tricks you remembered running smack out of Mexico You said a whispered prayer to a Saint or two Though you weren’t too big on faith With the sun hanging low you pushed the hammer down And you crossed yourself in case. The border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. The Border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. Down Freedom Road. Down Freedom Road. You topped the rise doing ninety five You saw the Rio Grande below But somewhere in between there were some cops looking mean And the shotguns weren’t for show It was a pork convention they were holding down there They were holding it for you But you’d gone too far to go back behind bars So you did what you had to do. The border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. The Border’s a mile away. Down Freedom Road. One step forward, no steps back Got to keep on going down the track Cops on your back, don’t think just act You’ve gotta keep on movin’ and that’s a fact Can’t do the time but you’ve done the crime

Last Days 06:16
LAST DAYS That night could you feel it in the Glenrowen Hotel As if death was hanging in the air Hint of premonition, the weight of vision, curse of dreams If you felt it did you even care They were making you a hero for which the troopers wouldn’t stand Especially with the blood of one of them on their hands These are our last days. There ain’t no-one here goes home. Did you ever feel you bit off more than you could chew Did you think you’d finally get your share Landowners make the rules as any fool can tell Troopers in their pockets everywhere You tore up all the mortgages they held over the poor What was the point of all that blood and thunder? What was the price of all those vows? If pride and fame are stars you must live under What do these words mean to you now? How long could you keep it up, this string of victories As your enemies all gathered round They had the money, the law, the government All primed to put you in the ground Jury found you guilty and the judges gavel fell You said such is life and I’ll see you in hell.

Bad Animals 04:00
BAD ANIMALS Cut me some slack Mac, that is so whack You doing crack, Jack? You’ll get a heart attack. Bad animals, bad animals. Who needs you? It was all hearts and flowers, ‘til death do we part Love lasts forever, at least from the start And so I believed all the things that you said If love was a lie at least it was lying in bed The seasons changed quickly, the hammer fell A season in eaven. A season in hell It’s not you, it’s me – the truest words that you said At least you could blame Mummy and Daddy instead Sure as shit pleasure is gonna end up in pain Use until empty then throw down the drain But it’s time you got off of that psychiatry couch And deal with that stuff that you’re talking about La La Love You. La La Lie. What a joke to make fools cry

THE END OF THE WESTERN WORLD The markets are collapsing and governments all fall The banks are going under, there’s no-one left to call It won’t be long before they’re putting backs against the wall You cannot lock the door now because the horse has jumped the stall It’s the end of the Western World Did you think it would last forever when all dreams come to an end A reed yields to the wind but there’s just so far it bends Did you ever have your values or ideals you would defend? Or was it all just interest on the money that you lend Now the blood runs in the street and piles of bodies grow When you shouted revolution, how were you to know? You wanted change, you wanted rage. You thought you’d strike a blow And now, for all your good intent, horror is what you show
5.
INTELLIGENT DESIGN I can’t see the picture The painting’s hung askew, I can’t see the sense in it It’s time a change came through There must be some disturbance In the Earth’s magnetic field Or I’ve been slipped a tab or two Because the world seems so unreal Where’s the intelligence Behind this design I want a revelation But I don’t see any sign Where’s the Intelligence Behind this design I want a revolution I want a change of mind Where is the moral compass Where is the guiding light Where’s the value system Where’s the wrong and right Where is the tomorrow Is that too much to ask Why’s it so hard to find love Is that too big a task I’m asking God to sort this out I’m saying he should shine a light They say that he had made this world At least he should do it right But I guess I have my doubts I think it can’t be real Coz a God who brings forth pain Can’t be too big a deal

Crazy World 06:08
CRAZY WORLD It’s not me. It’s you. You crazy World. I am leaving you behind. I want a D I V O R C from reality. Let’s have some applause for the sanity clause I have bolted all my doors. I’ve tossed you out and thrown away the keys If the poor were getting richer and the richer getting poor It wouldn’t be immoral, it would be against the law The big one’s coming down and it’s mutually assured And all them crazy people beating plough shears into swords And you ask right to my face what’s wrong with me But I’m the sanest person that you’re ever likely to see. There are those who have a problem if you’re black, yellow or white While it seems too many people are gonna miss a meal tonight They turn to God and Jesus, ask them what’s wrong and right When the simple truth is out there and it’s hidden in plain sight Why are the police always picking on me? I’m only out here trying to make some money I sell a little blow and I sell a little crack It ain’t really fair to bust me just for doing that It’s against the constitution. It’s against the bill of rights. Don’t hassle me, I’m innocent. I’ll burn your house tonight.

LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH It’s hard to face the day Can only pray there’ll be some better way Don’t tell me what is best The flesh is death Long live new flesh Cathode ray technology rains down upon my brain Is it real or memory or are these things the same? I tell you that my second life will be so much better than my first I want a life behind the screen, reality is worse It’s bread and water in my room. The walls are closing in I flick the switch upon the screen and let the games begin Now I’m a God, a warrior, a poet and a saint Behind the screen I’m everything that I really ain’t

SMASH YOUR TV They slap bars upon your window on the world So you salute when the flag is unfurled Masses opiated by the cathode ray There just ain’t no freedom today Unless you Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV Ignore the content, admire the style False faced celebrities smile You don’t have a life so you just borrow theirs Talking heads with dead eyed stares Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV An ad they screen nightly to help you believe A lie often told to deceive They’ll sell you a war like a fruit plucked and ripe Don’t believe it, it’s nothing but hype. Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV, Smash your TV

Tomorrow 04:08
TOMORROW Seconds passing, they tick away, nothing lasts just drifts away Treasured moments will never last and every pleasure seems from the past So move on to the future and don’t stand still Don’t die for a living. There’s always someone else who will Day to night and back to day, the waves run to the shore But even rocks will change their face to what has gone before

Graverobber 08:02
GRAVEROBBER This is a story. A very special story. About hiding in doorways. And riding on the subway. And all the things you’ve got to say. And a wheeler deals to pay your way . And all the funny games you got to play. As you stick your soul into an old ashtray. Like a grave robber, baby. With the radio on. And all morality gone. And you all sing along. This is a story about shivering in the alley. In the shadow of the valley. Of all the deaths you got to carry. Coz now you’re hanging out with Harry. And all the Toms and Dicks you got to marry. For a day or two too many. So you can make a pretty penny. This ain’t the kind of story that you learnt to write in high school. It ain’t got no meaning to it. Except you really shouldn’t ought to do it. And it ain’t got no happy ending. It’s got no end that needs amending. In the end there is one ending. And every story runs towards it. Characters ain’t motivated. Except to get obliterated. To where the pills and powders lead us. So we can lay beside still waters. So lead me not into temptation. Just deliver me to evil. Coz I’ve seen and felt the glory. So you can listen to my story. So Lisa says you gotta try it. You don’t even have to buy it. It’s better than any diet. And it keeps the baby quiet. And Candy says. Candy says. Candy says. Candy says. It’s easy. It’s easy. Like taking Candy from her baby.

about

Released as FU710

A return to more complicated themes, the Quick and the Dead Rabids is an exciting album. Opening with the fantasy nineteen seventies "love on the run" style "Freedom Road" it sets a course of point and counter point. From the opening track's romantic notion of crime, the second song "Last Days" appears to follow suit in a tale of the end of the Kelly Gang. But the middle eight turns a less favourable eye on the fantasy. "Crazy World" may start as a cry for freedom in an insane world but the narrator of the third verse is clearly is at as crazy as the world he abhors, if not more. The Narrator of "Long Live the New Flesh" loves his television more than human companionship. "Smash your TV" has other ideas. "The End of the Western World" might start as an apparent polemic but is less pleased at the cost in human suffering that revolution brings. Fundamentally, this is an album about dream and reality, fantasy and consequence.

Musically, well it pretty much goes to town. Instruments spin around the stereo landscape in a dizzy spidery collection of melodies and counter melodies. A kind of psychedelia built on design rather than improvisation.
